Recycled elm carries the marks of its earlier life, so variation in grain, colour and small imperfections are part of the material rather than faults. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, or one barely damp, drying the timber straight away so water is never left standing on it. Blot spills before they soak in. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners, and keep the piece out of direct sunlight and away from heaters so the timber does not dry out and split.
